Poe, Makes Waves For a Comeback !

Remember Poe? The erudite singer-songwriter burst on the scene in the late-'90s, scoring a massive hit with the single 'Angry Johnny,' the catchy track with the refrain, "I wanna kill you/I wanna blow you ... away." She followed that up a few years later with the critically-acclaimed album, 'Haunted,' a superb concept record about her relationship with her late father. With two albums, a hit single and strong reviews, Poe seemed to be on her way. And then, poof -- she seemilngly disappeared.

So what happened? "What I would say, in a nutshell, is very short and sweet: Myself as an artist was purchased as if a slave by a Texas oilman," she tells Spinner, adding her first contract was bought out by this businessman. "I have not gone a day without doing music. I've just done it anonymously. It's not like I haven't been playing -- I've played parties and this and that -- but anything that was way under the radar. I lived like an illegal immigrant for 10 years. I couldn't make any money, couldn't do anything."

Nearly a decade later, after a legal battle to match any music industry horror story, she is finally ready to re-emerge. "I feel as though I have been in a grave, not dead, but I've been spitting dirt out of my mouth for 10 years. I would say a month ago I saw the first ray of sunlight," she says. What was that sunlight? "Honestly, the key element [is] out of complete accident I played with my old band again. I'd been in the studio writing and recording and it was like that missing piece of 'I got my bros back, I remember what this feels like and I'm alive again.'"

She will reunite with her original 'Hello'-era band at L.A.'s Club Lingerie on Thursday, Jan. 28 as part of a benefit, 'An Evening of Higher Consciousness,' where she, Ben Lee and others will gather for an organization run by the Gyalwang Drupka. What is the organization? "Essentially the foundation was created by this guy called the Gyalwang Drukpa, which in a small part of Tibet this guys represents their Dalai Lama. He's a Buddhist," she says. "What I like about him is his focus is education. He's created a school up in the Himalayas, providing an education particularly to girls, which I love." The night will also donate money to Haiti relief through Live to Love International.

For Poe, though, it means just getting to play again in public. "It feels good to be playing again. The fact I can shortly be doing this with new material is pretty damn exciting," she says. And while she won't play new material tonight, she does say, "I'm not gonna give a firm deadline, but within the next month or so we'll create a release date for something new."

On top of that, she promises to explain in much greater detail where she's been for the last decade. "I could give you 10 years of facts and figures, but my job as an artist is to show you the footprints that were left on my soul," she says. "And that I can show you in music, so the best recount of really what transpired is ultimately in these songs."

Masters Of The Universe Classics : Whats coming ?

Since my last posting, many of the things I've previously posted about have been booming with information. Lets take a quick recap of whats happened in the past six months with one of our favorite subjects.

Masters Of The Universe Classics
Blew up like gangbusters this year, thanks largely in part, by the exclusivity of the line on website Matty Collector. The figure selection was safe this year. They didn't waver away from the top favorites and expected characters. 2009 contained releases of Skeletor in January, February saw Stratos, March saw Faker, April saw two releases for Merman, May we recieved the 1st of two Zodac's, this first one the cacausion version. June saw the relase of Hordak. July saw the release of two figures, Man at Arms, and He-Ro, who was the San Diego Comic Con Exclusive. He-Ro was also released on mattycollector.com in August, along with TriClops, September saw Webstor released, October we finally recieved Teela, complete with Zoar, as well as a bonus figure of Zodak, the african american character from the 2002 Cartoon. November saw fan favorite Scareglow released, along with a rerelease of He-Man ! December saw King Randor, along with two other figures. Green Godess and a rerelease of Skeletor. While not all of these characters were what I would call "Essential", I for one, thought they were pretty safe bets.

I officially started collecting in April, with Merman, so I missed Stratos and Faker.
2008 figure Beast Man was rereleased this past January. 2008 Comic Con exclusive King Grayskull is also going to be re-released on a traditional card back with minor redeco by year end 2010.

What really got me excited, is the line up so far announced for 2010. Mattel has officially opened the flood gates and is staying true to there promise of incorperating all of the past Masters of the Universe mythos, including the vintage Masters of the Universe line, Princess Of Power, New Adventures of He-Man, and unreleased prototypes of the Powers of Greyskull into the Classics line.

January saw this, with the first Princess Of Power figure, Adora.
This was not only the first POP figure for the Classic's line, but also the first time a figure of Adora has been produced ! February will see the release of the first deluxe beast in the line, Battle Cat. He is one of the most beautifully sculpted figures I have ever seen ! And he only retails $10 more than a regular figure. At a mere $30, he's a steel ! Also in February, we shall recieve Trap Jaw. Trap Jaw is also speacial because he contains not only a second, interchangeable head, but a second arm to transform him into Kronis. March will see the release of Moss Man, with a second head, that looks more Ape influenced.

April will see Evil Lynn, in her vintage yellow skinned goodness. She includes Screech, along with his perch and armor.

May will see the release of the first "New Adventures Of He-Man" figure. The 1989 line will make it's return with Optikk. Also announced for release sometime in 2010 are She-Ra and Orko.

At least four more figures are set to be unveiled at New York Toy Fare on February 14th. We'll see then just where this line is going to take us. We also know a new SKU to the line is debuting. Many believe this to be the army builder two packs that were announced at last years Comic Con. It was stated one would be good, one would be bad. Also announced at Comic Con was a weapons pack to be released seasonally. Though no information on that has come forward. I'm hoping the giants,Tytus and Megator are released soon, and that is the new Sku. As everything else was previously announced. I'll be reporting back shortly after the announcements to keep you posted.

It's Been Awhile

Did you miss me ? Probably not, as no one really follows this site, but suffice to say, much has happend in the six months I've been away. Relocating and an unreliable internet connection stopped me from updating. But that is in the past. Look for a revamped "Another Addiction" within the coming weeks with plenty of new Pop Culture nerdiness.

Melrose Place Returns !

Thats right, our favorite apartment complex of the 1990's is coming back full force this fall on the CW network. Much like the returning 90210, Melrose Place will have a mixture of new characters and returning old favorites. Michael Mancini, played by a still foxy Thomas Calabro, returns, as well as returning from the dead Sydney Andrews, played by the gorgeous Laura Leighton. Also returning, for a brief stint
is Josie Bissette, as Sydney's slightly more serious sister, Jane Mancini. The first
season supposedly revolves around a mysterious death in the apartment where everyoPne
residing in Melrose Place is a suspect. Sydney is rumoured to be the body floating in the water. That infuriates me, because in my opionion, why resurrect a character, just to kill her off in the first episode ? Laura Leighton is suppossed to appear all season in flashback form. We'll see. I don't want to give to much away, mostly because all information we know about the show is hearsay. I'll wait to watch to find out.

Look for Melrose Place to debut Tuesday, Sept 8th at 9pm, right after 90210.

Press Release for TMNT 5 !

So I was wandering about my favorite websites, and came a long this press release for a new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles film. I think it'll be a great success for the franchise. And with the 25th anniversary taking place this year, it was the time to annunce it. I wonder if it will be similar to the live action films
of the early 1990s ? Whose to say for sure. But it looks like it'll be ok.
Below is the press release. Turtle power yo ~

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™ Come Alive
In Major Motion Picture for 2011

New Theatrical Film to tell Origin Story of the Legendary Characters

Los Angeles, April 23, 2009— The Mirage Group has given the green light for development of a live-action major motion picture focusing on the origins of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, targeted for release in 2011.

Announcement of the latest (fifth) big screen version of the crime-fighting “heroes in a half-shell” comes on the day the Turtles kick off their 25th anniversary national “Shell-ebration” in New York City with multiple events that include the honor of lighting the Empire State Building in ‘turtle green’ and a unique outdoor presentation of their beloved first “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film at the Tribeca Film Festival “Drive-In”.

Mirage is partnering with producers Scott Mednick (“300”, “Superman Returns”, “10,000 BC”, and the upcoming “Where the Wild Things Are”) and Galen Walker (who produced the most recent computer-animated “TMNT” theatrical release) to create this live action film. Peter Laird, Gary Richardson, Frederick Fierst, Eric Crown and Napoleon Smith III will serve as executive producers of the film, which is based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters created by Laird and Kevin Eastman. Mednick and Walker will serve as producers. The project is being funded through Lightbox Productions, LLC.

“It was critical to us to find people who both understood the Turtles franchise and were accomplished film makers who appreciated both the action and humor components of the Turtles’ identity ,” said Gary Richardson CEO, The Mirage Group. “With Galen and Scott we know we’ve found great talent with those essential attributes.”

“The original dozen comics created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman are some of the best source material one could hope for,” said Mednick. “We’re excited to bring this story to a whole new generation of moviegoers as well as the legions of fans that have made the Turtles - Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael as well as Splinter, April O’Neil, Casey Jones and, of course, the great villain Shredder - a part of their world for 25 years.”

Mednick has begun reaching out to writers and directors and is already in discussion with several high-profile actors interested in portraying Turtles characters they loved as kids.

4Kids Entertainment, master licensing agency for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property, will be handling all of the movie merchandise licensing.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made their public premiere in May 1984 in a comic book published and distributed by Mirage Studios. A hugely successful TV series quickly followed, along with a record-setting licensing program and three successful live-action theatrical films. In 2003, the Turtles were re-introduced to a new generation through a fresh TV series, a computer- animated theatrical movie and new merchandising program. The 25th year of TMNT will provide fans of all ages with the opportunity to experience this evergreen property in a ten-city mobile tour highlighted by the TMNT Party Bus, a rolling museum of TMNT memorabilia.

Additional information is available on the http://www.tmnt25.com and http://www.4kids.tv websites.

When a friend a mine said her bootleg supplier could get the new Wolverine film, I jumped at the chance to see this film a few weeks early, without paying $40 in a theatre ($10.50 a ticket, and then snacks ? Bitch please). So I shelled out the $5
for a bootleg copy. Wonder of wonders

The first 40 minutes are crisp, beautiful filming. Yes, the story veers away from the comic book quite a bit, that being said, it makees up for it in the story telling. The characters might not be 100% counterparts to there comic selves, but in changing aspects of characters they become more believable. Sabertooth and Wolverine
becoming half brothers wasn't something I expected, but makes sense in this universe.

The version I have is a rough edit, some special effects aren't completed, but based on the rough, it is going to be a big Summer popcorn flick.

A lot of minor characters featured, and a lot of cameos. Fun times abound. Storm, despite the trailer, does not appear in the film. However, there is a scene
in the film where Quicksilver and Riptide make a quick appearance. Emma Frost has a small but crucial part, though they made her Silver Fox's sister for some reason. Cyclops and Emma have a bit of screen time together, which was interesting and somewhat of a bone thrown to long time comic fans. Even Professor X makes a cameo. Yup, ole Patrick Stewart came back to the franchise that made him richer than he already was.

Other notable characters include Gambit, Blob,Deadpool and Sabertooth. They call one character Barnall, but he is not Beak. I don't know who he's suppossed to be, but he's got cool electric powers. Maverick appears, but as his alter ego, Agent Zero.

I don't have a lot to say negatively. Except for the ending. The hodge podge of Deadpool into Weapon XI was retarded to say the least. And not to mention, Ryan Renolds is only in the movie for 20 minutes, and doesn't play Deadpool in the end of the movie. He does however make a credible Wade Wilson (before the cancer).

I give this film 4.5/5. Can't give it a full 5 because I haven't seen the finished cut.But if the sloppy copy is this good, I can only imagine what the finished copy will be.
